Spring is finally in the air. It’s a beautiful day, I’m in good spirits and feeling energized despite the fact that I am currently immersed in a season of uncertainty. Some major, life changing decisions have to be made. I’m tying up loose ends on several different projects and planning to be away for a one week vacation. When I return home it will be to do more of the same but my intention is to return with more focus and clarity to tackle what lies ahead. I’ve made the decision to come back refreshed rather than feeling like I need another week to recover from being away and I know from past experience that this is possible.
Just last night I heard from someone who has made the decision to make health a priority. She is making intentional choices and doing great! However, she is going on vacation soon and is concerned about falling off. She told me about the snacks she plans to take for the plane and asked for additional suggestions. I was so proud of her for thinking ahead, planning and reaching out. When your “why” is about your health, it can cause you to think twice and choose wisely.
Let’s be honest—when most of us think “vacation,” we imagine letting it all go. There’s this unspoken rule that travel means pressing pause on all the things that make us feel balanced, good and whole in everyday life… but here’s the truth: taking care of your health doesn’t have to stop just because your suitcase is packed. Tiny choices add up—not in a pressure-filled way, but in a way that helps you come back from your trip feeling lighter, clearer, and more aligned. That is my intention. And, it is in keeping with my newly intensified “why” life-changing news of the very best kind! Our daughter and son-in-law are expecting their first child, making us first time grandparents and our son and his fiance are soon to be married!
So pondering your personal “why” and packing some thoughts of self-care for your body and mind while you’re away can actually make your travels better. Imagine more energy, better mood, and coming home feeling refreshed—not like you need a cleanse and a nap. Tiny choices add up—not in a pressure-filled way, but in a way that helps you come back from your trip feeling lighter, clearer, and more aligned.
The good news? Health doesn’t have to be all or nothing. It can be flexible, fun, and surprisingly simple, even when you’re living out of a carry-on (and I will be!) You don’t need a suitcase full of protein powder or a rigid workout plan. It’s about shifting your perspective, not adding pressure.
Let’s start with movement. Travel naturally invites activity. You’re walking more, exploring more, and often being more present in your body than you are during your daily routine. That’s a win. And if there’s a gym around, and you’re so inclined, check it out. Or you may want to throw in some stretching in the morning or a little balcony yoga. Bonus points—but not required.
Food is another big one. Yes, you’re supposed to try the local specialties like that flaky croissant or perfect pasta dish. Food is part of the experience. You can savor every bite without guilt. Being healthy on vacation isn’t about restriction and deprivation—it’s about tuning in. Eat what feels exciting and good, and also notice what makes you feel good. Sometimes that’s a salad, sometimes that’s gelato. Both can belong. Remember there is food that serves the body and food that serves the soul-we need both!
Water, an essential travel companion, yet often neglected, offers one of the simplest ways to stay hydrated, energized, support digestion, and fend off the post-flight puff. Travel days especially can leave you feeling a bit dried-out. A reusable water bottle can be your best friend, and your skin, sleep, and brain will all thank you for it.
Sleep might be a little trickier, but it’s still worth keeping in mind. Late nights happen. Early flights happen. But even just trying to get a decent amount of rest between adventures can make a huge difference. Jet lag is real, and nobody wants to feel like a zombie at the “must see” attraction of the day. Little things help—like eye masks, earplugs, or creating a tiny bedtime routine that signals, “Hey, we’re winding down now.”
And then there’s the mindset piece—maybe the most important of all. Because even if your usual rhythm gets completely thrown off (and it probably will), that doesn’t mean your health has gone out the window. Let go of the guilt. Health isn’t about control. It’s about how you feel. And if you’re feeling vibrant, relaxed, and present, you’re doing something very right.
Don’t aim for perfection.Taking care of yourself on vacation doesn’t have to look like a wellness retreat. Sometimes it’s just staying connected to what helps you feel good. Maybe that’s walking to your favorite café in the morning. Maybe it’s ordering something green because your body’s craving it. Maybe it’s drinking a glass of water before your second glass of wine.
So go ahead and soak it all in. I know I will. Take the photos. Eat the food. Be spontaneous. And in the midst of it, remember that your well-being can come with you. You don’t have to “get back on track” when you return—because you never really fell off.
