Are You Sitting Down? Surprising Reasons to Get Up and Get Moving!!

·

·

Think you know all the reasons to get up and get moving? Then you may be surprised by benefits that go beyond shedding pounds and breaking a sweat!  I get it, in our increasingly sedentary world, completing most tasks requires very little movement so we tend to forget the value of movement and the impact it can have on our health and quality of life. Many of us spend hours sitting at desks, commuting, and lounging on the couch. While it’s true that we deserve a rest, we also deserve to be healthy. Our bodies were designed to move and health is the greatest gift we can give ourselves.

I had an eye opening conversation with a friend the other day. She is in her early thirties and works with older adults. In her day to day work and within her own family she has noticed the difference between those who regularly engage in physical activity such as walking, playing pickleball or taking an exercise class, and those who don’t. That observation has given her the motivation to make health a priority by making positive changes consistently over time. The vision of being able to do things independently, like get down on the floor to play with her “someday” grandchildren, and avoid chronic illness is what fuels her “Why”.

But she has age on her side, you say. Well maybe so, but before you pull the “I’m too old” card, I’d like to tell you of a 90 something year old woman from Kelowna Canada I read about recently who started working out regularly at the age of 60, and benefits from a level of agility that rivals those who are 40 years younger.

Exception to the rule? Let’s find out, by challenging ourselves to make small changes 1% at a time, regardless of the decade we currently find ourselves in! Our reasons for not exercising, (with some exceptions) are nothing more than excuses in disguise. I know because I’ve used them too. While it might seem to offer a bit of temporary relief or comfort, regularly doing so will have a negative impact on overall wellbeing, and gets us nowhere. We can make excuses or we can make positive changes that lead to improvement, but I’ve learned we can’t do both.

So, as promised, it’s time to reveal those surprising reasons to get up and get moving! Full disclosure, I am by no means an “exercise fanatic” but I know I have to, so I do. Although I mix up my routine, my favorite activity is to take long walks at my favorite spot by the beach. I’ve been doing it for many years and now my adult children sometimes join me which makes it even more enjoyable.  I have personally tested and experienced many of the benefits listed below.

Movement Can Give You a 2nd Wind

When you’re feeling sluggish by mid afternoon, movement can be the perfect pick-me-up. Physical activity stimulates the production of endorphins, and enhances oxygen flow to the brain, helping you feel more alert and focused.

Movement Can Enhance Creativity

Studies show that physical activity can improve divergent thinking, which is a key component of creative problem-solving. Next time you’re working on a creative project, try taking a movement break!

Movement Can Improve Physical Health

No surprise here, but worth emphasizing. Regular movement helps maintain a healthy weight, reduces the risk of chronic disease, and strengthens muscles and bones. It also can improve cardiovascular health, boost the immune system and aid in digestion to improve gut health. Want beauty benefits? It can also nourish skin cells giving your skin an extra glow!

Movement Can Be a Mood Elevator

Physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, boost self-esteem, reduce stress and improve overall mental well-being. Even just a few minutes of moderate activity can lead to significant improvements in mood.

Movement Can Improve Sleep Quality

If you struggle with getting a good night’s sleep, regular exercise might be the solution you’ve been looking for. Engaging in physical activity has been linked to improved sleep quality and a reduction in insomnia symptoms.

Movement Can Strengthen Social Connections

Joining a fitness class, walking group, or sports team can help you meet new people and foster a sense of community. Even casual activities, like taking a walk with a friend or playing a game of catch with your children, can strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.

Movement Can Increase Productivity

Taking time away from your desk to move can actually make you more productive. Physical activity improves focus, cognitive function, and efficiency. A quick workout or movement break can help you return to your tasks with renewed energy and a clearer mind.

Movement Boosts Brain Health and Improves Memory

Studies show exercise can boost memory and thinking skills.

So, are you ready to get moving?  If you already are, keep up the good work! If not, be sure to get your doctor’s ok. Then, get up and make movement a regular part of your day! Whether it’s a few minutes of stretching, a walk around the block, or dancing to your favorite song, every bit of movement counts. Embrace the joy of moving and experience the countless benefits it brings to the body, mind, and spirit.

Thanks, JoAnn, for another great article. Lately, I’ve been doing squats randomly during the day and picking up the free weights for arm exercises when I’m watching TV. I’m retired so I have a lot of time on my hands and know I can do better. Just healing from a broken bone in my foot, I can’t wait to get back to it!! Thanks for the motivation. There sure are plenty of reasons to do so.
